Creating a truly next generation fly fishing reel has always been a dream at RF Fishing South Africa. Perusing new designs, pushing CNC boundaries, new carbon lattice drag systems and robust coatings were just some of the areas that we wanted to innovate when it came to really stepping up the local and international fly reel game. A good fly reel will have either a fantastic drag system, or amazing aesthetics, perhaps even offer weight specific design features, but with our new A P E X range we held nothing back and included every detail and feature we could muster. The result is a fly reel that not only looks incredible but offers you the very latest in technology and possibilities. The A P E X and A P E X Light both have almost identical components, but the fully fledged A P E X is where our most powerful drag system can be found – with enough smooth stopping power to give even the mightiest of GT’s a hard time.

The Design and Features

The A P E X range is all about individual weight differentiation of the reels – meaning each weight has features that are specific to it.

The A P E X | 56 has the same drag system as the model weight 78 however the maximum drag pressure is reduced in order to reduce physical weight and increase broad range drag usage. The model 78 also features a full frame design to ensure line never slips between the spool and frame, this can be an issue when fast salt water species take you into your backing and on many occasions is one of the key areas many anglers loose fish no matter the fly reel or brand.

The A P E X 56 uses a more light weight cut open frame in comparison, this once again reduces physical weight which is an important aspect when matching to a 5/6/7 weight fly rod. Our obsession to weight saving on the A P E X range can be seen in nearly even angle of them, and through testing and adjustment we have combined a robust reel that is light weight considering the extensive feature list that they contain.

A heavily textured rear drag knob controls a beautifully smooth completely waterproof barrel styled multi stacked carbon drag system that can be adjusted incrementally from zero (no free-spooling to avoid over-winds) to an almost immovable maximum pressure. A low audible click is present on both the retrieval/outgoing of the spool. Startup inertia and overall drag usability is an extremely important aspect of a truly next generation fly fishing reel, the A P E X range have a multitude of latticed and woven carbon washers that provide almost zero start-up inertia while still remaining cool and maintenance free no matter situation. The days of having to service and care for your drag system is long gone, no need for oils/greases or lubes, the drag system innovation is the aspect we are most proud of.

CNC design cutting is pushed to the limits on the A P E X and A P E X light range of reels, each one starts out as a block of the highest quality A6060-T6 aluminum bar stock – the same quality aluminium airplanes are made from. Through an arduous amount of detailed highly pinpoint accurate CNC needle point milling, the A P E X is slowly turned and refined. Machined fly reels are robust, rigid and extremely durable in comparison to lower cost cast reels. The knobs, frames, spools, reel seat and other components are all new and unique the the A P E X range and fully machined to ensure precise close tolerances that you can expect from a world class fly reel.

The A P E X in comparison to the A P E X Light features our latest two tone black and red anodizing that highlight key design features on the reel and really make it stand out from the crowd. Emphasizing the A P E X name on the reel design you will notice the “diamonds” or A’s highlighted in the metallic red anodizing.
